Checking out of 2017, my creative team and I have created more than 200 promo videos for businesses in the last few years – with most of them generating 000s of views for the brand. Not bad at all, I think.

As we go into another year, I reflect on the way video usage is going for businesses. I see three key trends I want to mention here:

Funky and Creative… Yass!

Everyone is doing video and it pays off for social media in particular.

Video Ads for platforms such as Facebook and Instagram are particular on the rise. Businesses are realising that to do this – you have to be creative. Sometimes you only have 1 minute to create an impact!

Recently we have seen some wacky Facebook video Ads and in 2018 we are going to see more of them. Just yesterday, there was this guy that did his video in a bath tub all covered in foam (I think he was talking about something quite important – I really can’t remember…).

Funnels Funnels Funnels!

Yes. the sassy internet entrepreneurs caught onto this way back. The idea that you can automate your lead marketing using some cleverly set up engagement to capture and convert prospects from online traffic.

Within the funnel is the use of high engaging educational videos. Check out Sam Oven’s engagement funnel. You only have to subscribe to one of his opt-in to see the clever way video is used to capture your interest, converting you into a client with the use of educational videos presented by Sam himself.

In 2018, we will see more savvy corporate businesses using this same strategy when they realise the benefit of marketing automation and depending less on the traditional method of lead generation (which has tend to be networking and pitching for projects).

ShowBiz and all that jazz!

Yes ‘Live Video’ is in. This has been going on for a while now – but in 2018 we will see more business owners using the live video concept (and pre recorded videos) to create ‘shows’ as they realise that engagement, entertainment and content creation is the next step in standing out of crowd.

I mean have you seen Gary Vaynerchuk’s videos? I wonder if Gary has a creative team filming him whilst he slept – I’d watch it..

Next year, your challenges will not be just what format to make your videos (widescreen or square), how to make it emotionally engaging (who should be the actors) but how to create consistently integrating it into every element of your marketing and comms in a way that gives value and stand out.

Regardless of what you do in your videos in 2018, do tell stories. People love stories and they remember stories. I will leave you with one of the best storytellers we were lucky enough to film – Edna O’Brien. Amazing story teller, I could listen to her all day.
